원래 이름은  'Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show'였다. 1968년 뉴저지(New Jersey)에서 결성된 이 밴드의 오리지널 멤버는 레이 소여(Ray Sawyer)와 데니스 로커리어(Dennis Locorriere),빌 프랜시스(Bill Francis), 존 데이비드(John David),  그리고 조지 커밍스(George Cummings)였다.

쉘 실버스타인(Shel Silverstein)의 글로 처음 알려지게 되면서 광기 어린 무대 매너로 주목을 받다가, 마침내 1972년 'The Cover of Rolling Stone'의 대히트로 전성기를 맞이한다. 그들은 자신들만의 독특한 스타일을 앨범에 담아내어 70년대 내내 숱한 발라드 곡들로 차트를 장식했다. 레이 소여는 최근까지도 닥터 훅의 곡들을 각기 다른 버전으로 내놓고 있다
