60년대 중반 재즈 앙상블로 출발해 70년대를 대표하는 펑크 밴드로 성장한
Kool & The Gang 은 80년대 중반까지 최고의 R&B 보컬 밴드로 각인되기도 했다.
영화 <토요일 밤의 열기>에 삽입된 'Open Sesame' 로 그래미상을 수상했고
디스코 시대의 개막과 함께 예의 펑키한 편곡과 연주를 앞세워 인기를 구가했다.
아울러 연주 뿐 아니라 보컬 파트의 보강에도 주력해
1979년에는 얼(Earl Toon, Jr.) 그리고 제임스(James "J.T." Taylor) 를 영입했다.

이후 맹활약을 펼쳐 이들의 최고 히트곡 가운데 하나인 'Celebrate!',
'Get Down on It' 등이 1980년 이후 발표되었다.
1984~85년 동안에는 팬들에게 이들의 새로운 면모를 각인시킨
명 발라드 넘버 'Cherish' 를 히트시켰다.
